“Let's fall in love
Why shouldn't we fall in love?
Our hearts are made of it
Let's take a chance
Why be afraid of it?”
Arlen and Koehler’s song recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, invites young people to fall in love. But the old jazz song sounds a bit naïve nowadays.
I believe that never before has loving been such a “politically incorrect” subject. Career success and economic independence are what young people admire. Idols are young, self made millionaires. And love is mostly perceived as a risk, preventing people from seizing all the opportunities and fun that life provides. Love is associated with dependence, responsibility and commitment - and young people want control, detachment and freedom.
As love no longer justifies anything today, what remains is fear. And it is this fear that is now the foundation of all relationships among people, cultures and religions. What are we to expect? Individuals are more and more individualistic, and the risk is ending up alone.
In my work, i want to assume the risk of hoping that falling in love doesn’t compromise freedom. And that if we want to succeed in life, it is by learning how to love what is different, even though it may sound strange...
